ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings are intentional contrasts, a blend of deliberate shapes and expressive brush marks. I use color, line and texture to explore the joining of opposites — paint strokes, diverse paper fragments and linear marks merge to express a strong connection among disconnected things.
My creative process is both planned and spontaneous. I love mixing colors and creating new color palettes inspired by aerial landscapes, urban structures, geographic earth patterns, and micro-nature. I use acrylic paints, inks, pencil and pastel on canvas, sometimes on heavy watercolor paper, adding and scraping away the layers. I frequently add geometric shapes, repeating patterns and script-like marks to my art. Fine cross-hatched lines and paper fragments are hallmarks of my current work, unifying elements that counter or complement the developing painting.
I like structure in my life and in my abstractions, a point of familiarity within the ambiguous. I feel this gives each viewer a personal way to think about and connect with my paintings — a way to find art to love for a lifetime.
