Art | Story: Field Notes

In creating new art, which comes first — the composition or the color? With Field Notes, a dozen or more sketches and thoughts morphed into a single design that I wanted to paint using green and black with pale yellow and white.

I started with multiple  acrylic washes — thin layers of glazing paint — to saturate the canvas. The colors subtly commingled, forming a fluid, tone-on tone green background for the hand-made paper, inked lines and acrylic splashes. The script-like marks seem familiar, but are only the impression of writing. The soft emerald color and the strong script elements were the define elements for the name – Field Notes, a venture into a very green world.
